Transit officials in New York City have vetoed plans to rename the site of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” music video in tribute to the singer. In 1987, Jackson teamed up with Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese to shoot the 16-minute short film — featuring Wesley Snipes — at Hoyt-Schermerhorn Subway Station in Brooklyn.
Officials at the city’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) have scrapped the plan because they fear tourists and commuters will be confused by the name-change.
“Having Michael Jackson visit and moonwalk at this station was a huge deal not only for Brooklyn, but all of New York in the ’80s. And renaming this station in his honor would put it on the map and help ensure that people don’t forget,” says New York City Councilwoman Letitia James, who is spearheading the campaign for the Jackson subway tribute.

“My heart sank into my stomach. All the hard work, all the sleepless nights I had endured was playing back in my head as I read this article written by a woman I didn’t even know,” Curry told Black Voices’ BV Buzz Column on Thursday. “Why did I feel so connected to this article? Suddenly, it came to me. It was my work! It was my work, my voice, but in her words. I was frozen. Tears began rolling down my face as I read line after line after line. I couldn’t believe it. The idea that someone could gain notoriety from an issue that I first brought to the forefront is mindboggling. People were praising her for tackling an issue that had never been exposed. Hello?!? I wrote the book on it and started it years ago. The only difference between her article and my book is she used ‘dark-skinned’ and I used ‘Black.’”
