Usher, was unable to attend the BET Awards on Sunday night in Los Angeles because he is currently out of the country, but the singer is planning to honor the King of Pop when he returns to the States later this summer.
“It is with regret that I [was] unable to participate in the BET Awards Tribute to Michael Jackson on June 28,” Usher said in a statement released to the press on Monday.
“When the BET Awards producers and organizers reached out to me to participate in the tribute, I was extremely flattered and humbled by the opportunity to pay tribute to the world’s greatest musical icon,” the statement continued. “Unfortunately, I am currently overseas and would not make it back in time to the Awards show.”
“I look forward to seeing the show and I plan to work on a tribute to Michael Jackson when I return,” Usher added.
Atlanta’s own Keri Hilson performed “Turn Me On/Knock You Down” at the BET Awards 2009 in Los Angeles on June 28.

A grief-stricken Janet Jackson appeared at the 2009 BET Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The singing star brought fans a special message from her family in the wake death of her older brother Michael Jackson, who passed away suddenly last Thursday.
“My entire family wanted to be here tonight but it was too painful,” a choked-up Janet told the audience.
“To you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family and he will forever live in our hearts. On behalf of my family and myself thank you for your love and support. We miss him so much. Thank you so much.”
