Rev. Al Sharpton served as the officiating pastor as new parents Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey renewed their wedding vows in a Los Angeles hospital room over the weekend. The songbird, 41, and her much younger hubby celebrated their wedding anniversary with the arrival of fraternal twins on Saturday.

On her three-year anniversary with Cannon, Carey gave birth to a baby girl weighing 5 pounds, 3 ounces, followed by a baby boy, who weighed 5 pounds, 6 ounces. The family listened to Carey’s “We Belong Together” after the babies were born, Carey’s representative, Cindi Berger told PEOPLE.

“Thank you to @THEREVAL who came all the way to the hospital to renew me and my wife’s vows and pray with our children. Yep we just had a wedding in the hospital!” Nick, 30, Tweeted following the ceremony.

Rev. Al followed up with: “I am just leaving Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. She had twins yesterday on their 3 rd anniversary. I had prayer with them and the babies. I also conducted the renewal of their vows and the blessing of the newborn twins. Mariah looks GREAT, and the babies are beautiful. I am so moved by the sincere spiritual commitment of Mariah and Nick. They have not let success separate them from GOD. I am so proud.”

Civil rights leader and radio talk show host Al Sharpton will star in a syndicated Sunday morning news and information magazine show — titled Education Superhighway — premiering later this month.

“The TV show, which begins airing Sept. 26, consists of news and roundtable discussions primarily about education. Guests already lined up include Bill Gates, Newt Gingrich, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and president of the American Federation of Teachers Randi Weingarten,” The Hollywood Reporter dished last week.

The former presidential candidate — best known for his fiery oratory — previously fronted own reality TV show. Sharpton hosted the disgruntled employee series I Hate My Job, that ran on Spike TV for a year before being cancelled in 2005.

Kathy Jordan, 53 and daughter Dominique, 23, allegedly sped through a light on Eighth Ave. in Harlem on Friday, and were immediately pulled over by cops, who began writing the women tickets for the violation — but the girls allegedly got increasingly aggressive with the officers, who slapped the two with charges disorderly conduct and obstruction of governmental administration.

The incident has left Sharpton seething – and he has gone online to vent his anger at the way cops handled the situation.

In a series of posts on his Twitter.com page, he writes: “I cannot imagine how two unarmed women with no record could be taken in cuffs from a traffic dispute with NO personal or property damage involved. Well this is what we deal with every day. We will never accept unfairness. (There was) no drugs or drinking at all.”

Rachel Noerdlinger, a spokeswoman for Rev. Sharpton said Dominique, wants to show that there the younger generation can handle leadership.

“She asked her to Dad to let her handle it to show her maturity and to signal that she didn’t need him to intervene on her behalf. Almost like ‘I’m grown Dad, I got this.’”

The cartoon refers to Travis The Chimp, who was shot to death by Stamford, Conn. Police on Monday after it mauled a friend of its owner. The cartoon, created by Sean Delonas, depicts a dead chimp and two police officers, one with a smoking gun.

“They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

On Wednesday, Rev. Sharpton released a statement calling the cartoon offensive and divisive. It reads:

“The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee….”

Sharpton said:

“Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill?”

The cartoonist called the controversy “absolutely friggin’ ridiculous” in a statement to CNN late Wednesday:

“Do you really think I’m saying Obama should be shot? I didn’t see that in the cartoon. It’s about the economic stimulus bill. If you’re going to make that about anybody, it would be [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi, which it’s not.”

NY Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan also stood behind the cartoon:

“The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

“His way of doing things was, ‘If we’re going to support you and you’re not going to support us, then we have to focus on telling the African-American community not to spend their money,’” said La-Van Hawkins, a partner in Hawkins Food Group, which owns and operates fast-food franchises nationwide.

Rev. Al Sharpton was arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday as he joined hundreds of demonstrators in blocking traffic to protest the acquittal of three New York City Police detectives who fired 50 shots into a car of three unarmed men- resulting in the November 2006 murder of Sean Bell, 23. The father of two, who had just left his bachelor party at Queens, New York nightclub, was set to be married later that day. Shooting survivors Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman, and Bell’s fiancee, Nicole Paultre Bell were also arrested. They are being charged with “civil disobedience.”

“Today we want motorists to think about how three people were shot 50 times by officers,” Rev. Sharpton said on Wednesday morning.

“It’s about multiple gatherings to show real concern, so the federal government will have to deal with the public outcry and say, “wow people are so upset in New York”…feeling the civil rights are at risk here, that we have to look into this in a serious way,” Rev. Al Sharpton said.

Rev. Al Sharpton has denied the veracity of New York Post story claiming that he and Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama had a “heated” phone call about plans to protest the acquittal of three NYPD police officers in the Sean Bell “50 Shots” case.

The article claims Sharpton was “infuriated” by a plea for nonviolence made by the Illinois senator, and accused Obama of trying to “grandstand in front of white people.”

The activist minister’s National Action Network is calling the article “an outright falsehood.” According to a statement from Charlie King, Acting National Director of NAW:

“Everything stated in the New York Post regarding yesterday’s conversation between Senator Obama and Reverend Sharpton is false, and is either a fabrication of the Post journalists who wrote the story or the supposed unnamed source for the story. In my view, there is a big difference between tabloid journalism and shoddy journalism. This story is clearly the latter and is unacceptable….For the record, Reverend Sharpton and Senator Obama had a good conversation yesterday about the need to address both police misconduct and reducing crime. As with the numerous conversations they have, it was friendly, respectful and substantive.”
