A fan who bombarded Ashanti’s manager mother with filthy sex fantasies about the singer/actress in a battery of text messages and photographs will spend the next two years in a New York prison.
Devar Hurd, 31, was sentenced to two years behind bars in a Manhattan courtroom on Thursday. In December, Hurd was convicted of stalking and other charges and has already served about eight months while awaiting trial and sentencing. The Grammy Award-winning singer’s mother, Tina Douglas, said she was frightened and disgusted by messages that included photos of Hurd’s genitals and of the Douglas family’s Glen Cove, Long Island home.
Hurd said the messages were intended as friendly flirting with Ashanti, who he claims was in love with him. After Hurd’s conviction in December, doctors diagnosed the aspiring rapper with a delusional disorder. Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber recommended psychiatric treatment for Hurd in prison.
Fleeting R&B star Ashanti has reportedly signed a deal to create a music-based reality competition, similar to American Idol.
Ashanti’s manager mom Tina Douglas confirms that the “Foolish” star has teamed with Reveille Productions for the reality contest: “It’s an unscripted television show that is definitely music related. We’ll be revealing more in the coming weeks. She has her own record label, called Written Entertainment, and the show is going to revolve around her label… It’s going to be really big.”

Hurd faces up to up to two years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 11.

Grammy Award-winning R&B vocalist Ashanti performed a tribute to the classic fantasy film The Wizard of Oz on CBS’ Early Show on Thursday. The former First Lady of The Inc. has played Dorothy — a role originated by Judy Garland in the 1939 — in the Broadway production of The Wiz as well The Muppets Wizard of Oz.
