Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama says he is “heartbroken” over the double homicide that claimed the lives of Jennifer Hudson’s mother and older brother in Chicago Friday.
“Michelle and I were absolutely heartbroken to learn about this unimaginable tragedy and we want Jennifer to know that she is in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” the Illinois senator said in a statement Saturday. “We also pray for the swift and safe return of her young nephew.”
Last August, Jennifer, who won an Oscar for her role in the 2006 film Dreamgirls, performed the National Anthem during the Democratic National Convention at the request of the Obama campaign.
“We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation concerning the deaths of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson,” Lisa Kasteler, a rep for the actress, said in a statement Friday. “No further comment will be made and the family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.”
According to the Associated Press, Chicago Police are looking for William Balfour in connection with the slayings. Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for 7-year-old Julian King, Balfour’s son with Jennifer’s older sister Julia. They are seeking a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban.
TMZ.com has confirmed that Jennifer Hudson’s brother, Jason Hudson, was the second victim in the double homicide that resulted in the death of the Oscar winner’s mother in a home on the South Side of Chicago Friday.
An all points bulletin has reportedly been issued for Jennifer’s 7-year-old nephew, who may have been taken from the scene of the crime.

Jennifer Hudson is engaged to David Otunga, who appeared as “Punk” on the VH1 reality show I Love New York 2.
“I can confirm that Jennifer got engaged to her boyfriend David on Friday night in LA,” Jennifer’s rep said in a statement to People Magazine on Sunday.
