Simon Cowell’s making a big splash with his first selection as judge on the forthcoming reality show The X Factor. Antonio “L.A.” Reid, the now former chariman of Island Def Jam, has stepped down from the company — where he mentored such megastars as Mariah Carey, Kanye West, and Usher– to take a chair on the new Fox program, Billboard.com Thursday.

Reid will let his Def Jam contract lapse this year so that he can judge. In a statement this morning, the former star of the ’80s band The Deele formally resigned from Def Jam Music Group. In the letter, he wrote:

“To my Island Def Jam family:

After much consideration, I have decided to leave my position as Chairman of the Island Def Jam Music Group.

I have always thrived on growth and the next great challenge, and I look forward with much enthusiasm to what the future holds.

I am extremely proud of our beautiful roster and all we have accomplished in my seven years with IDJ. We continue to have incredible success together with today’s most phenomenal superstars – Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, The Killers, The Dream, Chrisette Michele, Jeezy, and Ludacris to name a few.

I want to thank all of you for your amazing contributions.

Reid will eventually be joined by two other hosts and a slew of big names have been connected to the show. Jessica Simpson, George Michael, Paula Abdul, and Nicole Scherzinger have all been mentioned as possible judges.

Auditions for The X Factor start March 27 in Los Angeles and the show airs in September. The grand prize is a $5 million recording contract with Sony Music.

NYC snitches have leaked a recent e-mail between very married Def Jam chief and his ASSistant (pun intended).

“Even the short sweet ones are delicious!!!!!!” Reid writes from his AOL account.

“Want to go back for more,” she says.

“With eyes closed,” he writes back.

“Yes, with eyes closed, but just while I’m kissing you,” she responds.

Later she says, “I wanna see u” but he responds, “mmm…shakir and phil in my office.”

The hell?
