Jay-Z was furious after Lil Mama jumped onstage while he performed with Alicia Keys at the MTV Video Music Awards – because the performance took weeks to plan

The “Lip Gloss” rushed the stage unexpectedly towards the end of the superstars’ rendition of “Empire State of Mind” at the ceremony last week. Although Jay-Z tried to shoo the star away, Lil Mama even posed with the duo as the song came to a close.

“Me, personally, I would never do that. I would never have the nerve to do that. It’s just like, someone’s up there performing…” the “Run This Town” star told Hot 97 personality Angie Martinez on Wednesday. “We went through rehearsals, we did run-throughs and we worked really hard at the performance to put on a show for people and to interrupt that moment for us, you know, I don’t think that was the right thing to do.”

In fact, Hov feels the incident was just as inappropriate as when Kanye West ruined Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech earlier in the night: “I actually thought it was the equivalent of what Kanye did to Taylor Swift but nobody really talked about that because I’m not a little sweet girl from the middle of America. And I’m cool with her (Lil Mama) being excited and all that but you have to understand, people put in work to make that performance happen, that took weeks the planning of it. If you look at those screens, we had to go to Yankee Stadium to shoot that live, there was a lot of planning. To disrupt that was out of line. I was a little angry to be honest, but what do I do, fight Lil Mama?”

In an interview with MTV News on Tuesday, Mama claimed an “adrenaline rush” caused her to onstage uninvited during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ performance of “Empire State of Mind.” The Brooklyn native says she never intended to disrupt the show.

“I’m sitting in my seat two rows away from the stage, and Jay-Z is walking through this tunnel and just, like, this adrenaline rush is pumping [through me],” Lil Mama explained to MTV News on Tuesday. “He started [rapping], and Alicia Keys is going, ‘The big lights will inspire you,’ and really, I got emotional. Yeah, New York! Jay! I started to feel him, and I started to feel myself. I just felt the energy, and I got up and started walking to the stage. I was just rooting him on as a champion. Bigging up my borough, bigging up my brother.”

The America’s Best Dance Crew judge has since apologized, and insists she didn’t realize Hov and A. Keys may not have appreciated her surprise appearance.

“If in any way Jay-Z or Alicia Keys feels offended, I want to apologize to both of you,” she told MTV News. “I actually would love to have a one-on-one, because I actually felt like I was being felt [for my actions]. I felt like there was a bond. I didn’t get a chance to hear what was coming out of [Jay-Z's] mouth. I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful. I was just feeling it, and it happened at a moment which happened to be the VMAs, so it was ‘wow.’”

“I [only] wanted to support Jay, I wanted to be a supporter,” she added. “I wanted to stand up with him and tell him he was doing it.”

Lil Mama is considering signing up for online college classes.

“The University of Phoenix offers classes online, so I want to do that,” the rapping and dancing “Lip Gloss” singer told The New York Daily News’ Gatecrasher. “I’d major in writing. I write my own music, and I love to write.”
