Hot on the heels of recording the smash single “Statistics,” Lyfe Jennings has become one.

The platinum-selling artist — who burst onto the scene with the 2004 single “Must Be Nice” — said goodbye to his fans on Twitter Wednesday after being sentenced to three and a half years behind bars for leading cops on a high-speed chase following a fight with his ex-girlfriend in 2008.

The rapper, 37, was given the jail sentence in an Atlanta court Wednesday for criminal trespassing, discharging a weapon near a street, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. During a heated confrontation with ex-girlfriend Joy Pound, the mother of his children, he kicked the door of a house belonging to Jeff Kendrick and then fired rounds from a gun in the street before fleeing the scene in his 2005 Corvette. Lyfe was later caught and booked at Cobb County Jail, where he was charged with DUI test refusal, criminal trespassing, discharging a weapon near a street, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and fleeing or attempting to elude a police offer.

He was released on $50,000 bond. After Wednesday’s sentencing, Jennings thanked his fans on Twitter for supporting his career:

“This will be my last post. To everyone who gave me a chance I am forever in your debt. I have had a fabulous career because of you. All I can say I parting is that I have been honest with [y'all]].”

“I would like to think that I’ve changed lives by changing my own, tho[ugh] I can’t be sure. But one thing I am sure of is God gives and takes away in measure. He is fair, just and forever. Amen from a man… Smile, it’s contagious..”

Earlier this year, Lyfe revealed that his newly-released fourth album, I Still Believe, would be his last:

“[The album] is about all kinds of relationships. How we try to hold on sometimes for the sake of holding on. But, in reality, no matter how many breakups turn into make-ups, sooner or later we realize that this person is who they are and we need to let go. No grudges, no regrets. Just realization. Just acceptance. Just life.”

Jennings was released from prison in 2002 after serving 10 years for arson.

R&B star Lyfe Jennings has been arrested in Smyrna, Georgia after allegedly firing a gun before leading police on a high-speed chase.

Lyfe has been charged with weapon possession by a convicted criminal and still faces charges of attempting to elude officers, firing a gun near a public highway, and refusing to take a police DUI test.

In 1992, the multiplatinum-selling singer was sentenced to ten years in jail for arson.
