A dreadlocked teenager from Vicksburg, Mississippi is charging his high school with discrimination after learning that his ethnic hairstyle will keep him for participating in the institution’s annual homecoming festivities.
Well, it looks like Bishop Eddie Long has ‘splain’ to do.
The extremely-homophobic pastor of the nationally known Atlanta-area megachurch New Birth Missionary Baptist is accused of sexually-abusing young men in his mentoring program — and the recent emergence of a set of suspect cellphone snaps may support those claims.
In lawsuits filed this week, three men who were members of the 25,000 member New Birth claim Bishop Eddie Long coerced them into sexual relations with gifts including cars, cash, and travel when they were 17 or 18 years old. New photos purportedly show Pastor Long posing in a bathroom mirror with muscle shirts. The photos were allegedly sent to at least one of the three young men who filed suit against Long for sexual harassment this week.
As the Old Folks say: “Something in the milk ain’t clean!”
It’s time for “Practice What You Preach: The Bishop Long Edition….”
Bishop Eddie Long is facing allegations of sexual and pastoral abuse from two young former parishoners, who claim the popular man of God coerced them into sexual relationships as teenagers.
You may not know his name, but if you’re a musical aficionado or even grew up loving the sitcoms of the ’90s, you’ve likely seen his work.
Actor Carl Gordon — who became a Broadway star after being bitten by the acting bug in his mid-forties — died in New York on Tuesday after a lengthy battle against non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, The New York Times said Saturday.
Jaleel White — the child star best remembered for playing proverbial nerd Steve Urkel on the 1990s sitcom Family Matters — has been accused of punching his “baby’s mama” in one of her breast implants.
Legendary singer, dancer, and actress Lena Horne — who broke racial barriers for African-Americans when she signed a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio in the 1940s — died at a New York hospital over the weekend. She was 92.
Two suburban Washington women are outraged after they say they were denied emoat a Six Flags theme park in Largo, Maryland because of their dreadlocks. Although the park is located in Prince George’s County — one of the wealthiest predominantly Black suburbs in America — The Six Flags Corporation considers the largely ethnic hairstyle as “extreme” and says it simply will not hire people with locs.
A spokesperson for the American Civil Liberties Union believes that defining locked hair as unprofessional is racially insensitive, Six Flags disagrees. The ACLU says it had similar inquiries about Six Flags Largo’s dreadlocks policy in 2006. The park issued this statement to ABC News’ Washington affiliate:
“Six Flags enforces a conservative grooming policy across all parks. The policy does not permit certain hairstyles such as variations in hair colors, dreadlocks, partially shaved heads, tails, and hairstyles that impair vision. Braided hair is allowed but must be in neat, even rows and without beads or other ornaments.”
Even more sad news to report this Tuesday: Dorothy I. Height, 98, a founding matriarch of the American civil rights movement, died early Tuesday of natural causes, said a spokesperson for her National Council of Negro Women. Read the rest of this entry »
Attention, Wal-Mart Shoppers: A 16-year-old New Jersey boy, who allegedly made a announcement: “Attention, Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now” at a Wal-Mart in Washington Township, New Jersey last week, was arrested Friday and released to his parents.
The teen, whose name is not being released because of his age, is accused of picking up one of the courtesy phones and making the racist announcement that caused outrage among Wal-Mart customers and made national headlines March 14.
He was charged with harassment and bias intimidation, and released to his parents.
“We have updated our intercom system at this store to prevent this from happening again. We again apologize to all of our customers and associates who had to listen to something so offensive,” Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar said Monday.
