As the one year anniversary of her incarceration emerges, Remy Ma has written to fans from her prison cell – thanking them for their continued support as she battles through an eight-year-stint behind bars.

Last spring, the 26 year old “Lean Back” star -was sentenced in May (08) on charges of assault, weapons possession and attempted coercion for shooting Makeda Barnes Joseph in the abdomen outside a New York nightclub in July 2007.

Still protesting her innocence, Remy says she wouldn’t wish a life behind bars on “her worst enemy.”

In an open letter to GlobalGrind.com, the former Grammy nominee writes: “They have this program called YAP (Youth Assistance Program) they keep asking me to join. It’s a program that brings inner city kids to the prison to show them what it’s like to be incarcerated. I hear that every group asks about me but I’m a little hesitant to join. They think it will give the kids a reality check that this can happen to anyone.”

“I however feel that it’ll be more of the kids wanting to see Remy Ma the rapper and because of that they won’t get that I’m actually in jail. So I’m still contemplating,” she wrote.

Remy says the loneliness of prison is a lot tougher than she ever thought it would be:

“I rarely listen to the radio because it’s sort of depressing. Not being able to record is stressful not because I’m a rapper but because that was my way of venting and expressing myself. So I write a lot! So much that now I have a callous on my finger from holding a pen.”

She continued, “Not being able to go somewhere when you want, see your family when you want, can’t use the phone, take a shower, wear clothes, or even eat when you want – super aggravating… I really feel like an inmate.”

Attorneys for the Bronx native have filed an appeal, claiming the trial was “riddled with mistakes by the judge.”

Remy is asking to be released by Christmas.

Remy Ma and the woman she was sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting, Makeda Barnes-Joseph appeared in a joint phone interview on Hot 97’s Miss Jones in the Morning on Thursday.

“This thing makes me cry every time I talk about it. I have these ugly scars. My stomach is crazy….She’s got a kid. She’ll come out in eight years and see her kid. I might not be able to have kids.”

Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison on Tuesday stemming from the July 2007 shooting of her former friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph.

“I stand here today as Remy Mackie,” the “Lean Back” star cried to the court. “I’m a loving wife, mother and loving daughter and loving sister to my brothers and sisters.”

The judge seemed somewhat impressed with Remy’s humble upcoming and subsequest rise to hip hop stardom:

“I’ve learned Remy is an intelligent and charitable young woman,” Judge Rena Uviller said. “She’s overcome a difficult childhood. Her music has inspired people in need. She’s loved and has support from her family.”

“This is somewhat of a pattern. This is not the first time she has been engaged in a violent act. She never took responsibility for her actions. This has nothing to do with rap it’s about the actions of one person. Remy is an extremely angry young woman who feels the rules do not apply to her.”

“Get the fuck off me. Fuck ya’ll. Fuck jail,” Rem’s fiance, rapper Papoose, yelled as bailiffs subsequently escorted him out of Manhattan Supreme Court. “I don’t care. Lock me up. Lock me up. Take me to jail. Arrest me. It’s all about money.”

Remy Ma’s jailhouse nuptials to Papoose were abruptly cancelled on Monday after the Brooklyn-bred MC tried to bust Rem out of Rikers Island!!

Papoose showed up with a most curious wedding present: a handcuff key, the New York Daily News reports.

According to the NYDN:

“A wedding was scheduled today and a visitor to that wedding service was found to be in possession of jail contraband so the wedding was canceled,” a corrections official said in a press statement on Monday.

“The key that was found today easily opened handcuffs that we and other law enforcement officials use….The visitor was sanctioned by not being able to visit Rikers Island again for 6 months…He was asked to leave.”

Pap- real name Shamele Mackie – won’t be able to see his again fiancee until November, thanks to his little attempted Prison Break. The couple never did make it to their wedding ceremony.

Wedding bells will ring Monday for jailed hip-hop star Remy Ma, who plans to marry her boyfriend, rapper Papoose, on Rikers Island, a source close to the rapper said.

The bride and groom will be allowed two guests each for the ceremony.

After being convicted of first-degree assault and weapons charges for shooting her former friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, last July, Remy Ma will have to wait until next month to learn her fate. Remy’s sentencing date, which was set for April 23, has been rescheduled until May 13th at 10 a.m.
