Shyne was officially deported to his native Belize on Wednesday, according to reports. He arrived in the nation around 2:40pm local time Thursday, escorted by a U.S. Marshall. He was processed by local authorities at the airport, then was welcomed by his father Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize, his mother Imeon Myvett, as well as other members of his family.
Reps for the once promising rapper tell the media that he would now like to be called Moses Michael Leviy to reflect his conversion to Judaism.
“Shyne is home. He wants to say how happy he is to be home and to be a free man,” said the rapper’s uncle, Michael Finnegan, current Minister of Housing. “He would love to have a conversation with the media, but because he was legally advised by Professor Ogletree, he must not speak to the media because he doesn’t want to prejudice his situation with the US government or with the Belize government. So he asked me to ask you that he does not want to disrespect you the media, but please to understand what is going on.”
Shyne will be deported to his home country of Belize later this month. The once promising rap star was released from an upstate New York prison last month after serving nearly 9 years for his involvement in a club shootout with Diddy and Jennifer Lopez in 1999. One person was severely wounded. The “Bonnie & Shyne” star is currently in an immigration holding facility in Buffalo, NY awaiting deportation Shyne, who is the son of the Prime Minister of Belize, will have to appeal the decision if he hopes to be allowed entry back into the States, Hot 97 DJ Angie Martinez revealed on Tuesday.
Shyne’s team is fighting to stay in the US where his mother and his grandmother live and where they raised him….but it seems like he’s going to have to continue the fight from Belize. Shyne will be released from Immigration custody but will then be deported to Belize soon. He has Harvard Professor Charles Ogletree advocating on his behalf in concert with his legal team. They’re still urging fans to reach out to Governor Patterson’s office to petition for Shyne’s pardon (click here for Paterson’s email and his address) but deportation is imminent.
The Prime Minister of Belize has formally appealed to the Governor of New York to pardon his son, incarcerated rapper Shyne, and allow him to remain in the U.S. In 2001, he was convicted of first degree assault and reckless endangerment in relation to a club shooting in New York City, which left a woman with serious facial injuries.
Shyne is currently being held in a federal immigration detention center in Buffalo, NY following his release from New York’s Woodbourne Correctional Facility last Tuesday, where he served more than eight years for a 1999 club shooting. Rapper Jamal “Shyne” Barrow is being held by immigration officials and facing possible deportation to his native Belize after finishing a nearly nine year stint behind bars.Shyne was released from a New York State prison Tuesday for his involvement in a shooting in the company of mentor Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and actress Jennifer Lopez at Club New York in 1999.
Shyne was sentence to 10 years for attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment.
According to MTV.com, Shyne’s citizenship is currently being reviewed.
His release is now under review, as representatives for the rapper revealed that the Brooklyn MC is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at an unspecified facility in Western New York State. Officials are determining whether or not to deport the rapper, who was born in Belize, a rep explained. “Shyne is currently in federal custody while his future immigration status is determined,” the rep said in a message to MTV News.
Shyne is expected to be released from prison sometime today. The 30 year-old rapper, born Jamal Barrow, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in June 2001 for weapons charges stemming from a high-publicized 1999 shooting at Club New York involving Diddy and Jennifer Lopez. During his eight year stint behind bars, the former Bad Boy protege has been shuttled between upstate New York correctional facilities at Woodbourne and Clinton and released two albums, his 2001 self-titled debut and 2004′s Godfather Buried Alive.
Shyne is expected to be released from New York State’s Woodbourne Correctional Facility later this year for good behavior, the New York Post reports. Shyne, whose real name is Jamal Barrow, was sentenced to ten years for the 1999 shooting at Club New York.
