A profanity-laden performance by Washington, DC-born rapper Wale has the controversial lyricist seeped in controversy in his hometown.

According to The Free Lance Star, University of Mary Washington President Rick Hurley was forced to issue a “public apology” in the wake of “extreme profanity” used by the “Pretty Girls” rapper during an outdoor homecoming concert on Friday.

It was the student body who selected Wale has this year’s homecoming, but President Hurley says at least three local residents in neighborhoods surrounding the Fredericksburg, Virginia campus complained of explicit lyrics during Wale’s set

“I am sorry that a high-spirited weekend on campus ended on such a negative note for some of our closest neighbors who were offended by both the volume and the content of the music,” Hurley told The Star.

He says university would have considered holding the concert indoors, if they’d taken the time to Google the term “Wale” before placing a call to the artist’s agents. After all, this isn’t the first time that a venue has been left with a sour taste over Wale’s wordplay. Over the summer, the City of Baltimore considered taking legal action against the Washington rapper after he performed at “Artscape,” a free, city-sponsored event. And of course, there were the claims of homophobia after Wale tried to wiggle out of a performance at DC’s Black Gay Pride Festival in May.

President Hurley hasn’t ruled out outdoor concerts, but vows that from now on campus officials will thoroughly research all acts before inviting them to campus.

Despite the controversy, Wale remains a fixture on the college concert Chitlin’ Circuit in the suburbs surrounding Washington. In the past month, he has performed at George Washington University, the University of Virginia, Washington & Lee University, and James Madison University.

He’s already been called out for alleged colorism in his “Pretty Girls” video, now DC-born rapper Wale has prompted allegations that he is a homophobe after abruptly canceling a scheduled performance at next weekend’s gay-themed DC Black Pride event.

Black Pride had wanted to book a Black male artist for their 20th annual festival after years of booking female headliners. Wale, 25, was paid $18,000 for a 45-minute stage performance at The Washington Convention Center, but backed out of the show because he allegedly hadn’t realized it was a gay-themed event. The simply isn’t true, says festival organizers, who suspect Wale jumped ship for fear of backlash from the rest of the hip-hop community.

The Washington Blade reports: “Earl Fowlkes, a board member and spokesperson for Black Pride… said Black Pride organizers were startled this week when they received two e-mails from Wale’s agent, one saying the rapper had to cancel due to ‘family obligations,’ and the second saying he didn’t know Black Pride was a gay-related event when he agreed to appear. Wale’s agent has refunded an advance fee, but Fowlkes said the group is considering legal action for breach of contract.”

“We were clear about what kind of event this is,” Fowlkes told The Blade. “After doing this for 20 years, we certainly don’t want to put ourselves and the artist in an uncomfortable situation by not telling them what we are. We’re Black Gay Pride, and the people coming out there are members of our community. We made that very clear.”

Jeffrey Richardson, a noted Washington gay rights activist, says Wale’s actions are an extreme example of homophobia — which proves that the community still has a long way to go in battling prejudice.

“This is pure homophobia on his part,” Richardson said. “This reflects the feelings of the broader community. For a lot of folks, the biggest fear is of being labeled as gay. It’s a stigma we still have a lot of work to do to overcome.”

Pride organizers have since booked fellow Washington-area native J Holiday as the new headliner.

Drake, Kid Cudi, and Wale earn a spot as “The Gangsta Killers” in the year-end issue of the respected GQ Magazine.

GQ writes:

”Have you been listening to hip-hop this year? If not, we’ve got good news: The gangster persona is finally dead, and these are the kids who killed it. One song at a time, they built a new era in which duct-taped kilos, exotic firearms, and freaky girls are out and real life is the focus.

That can still mean trumped-up egos and battle raps, but it also means family, drama, vicious hangovers, and regular chicks who will make good love to you, then stomp out your heart. (Weed? Weed is always in.) Wale is as famous for his live shows as for the slick-witted lyricism of his debut, Attention Deficit.

Kid Cudi is the cutup who scored with the stoner anthem “Day N Nite” and his album Man on the Moon. And then there’s Drake, who found himself turning down multimillion-dollar offers after his single “Best I Ever Had” exploded. (It helps that the girls like Drake. A lot.) Drake’s debut, Thank Me Later is easily the most anticipated album of 2010 So what do these underdogs thing about being cast as gangster slayers?

“The dope boy is going to be a fixture of black culture as long as “thug” is a legitimate option alongside a job” Drake says. But I’m not going to rap about how much crack I’ve sold.” Cudi also laughs at the idea of talking tough. “Anybody from cleveland will tell you I wasn’t in the streets” he says. “Ask them! They’ll say, ‘Scott was the goofy class clown.”

Love Is In The Air: Washington-born rapper Wale, whose latest album, Attention Deficit, was released Tuesday, isn’t shy about expressing his feelings for Beyonce’s little sister Solange.

“She’s amazing. She’s a good person,” he said at his album release party at Marquee in Manhattan Monday night. “Any single mother contributing to society the way she does, I got a lot of love for them. She’s got to do a lot on her own and raise a young black man in this day and age, so my hat goes off to her. She’s definitely an anomaly.”
