Rapper Wyclef Jean continues to deny improprieties of funds raised by his charity foundation, Yele Haiti. Breaking down in tears during a press conference yesterday afternoon, Wyclef denied reports that he has used money donated to the organization for personal gain.
Wyclef has released a personal statement on accusations of corruption against his Yele Haiti Foundation. In August 2009, the group filed overdue tax returns for 2005, 2006, and 2007, documents showing that Jean and fellow board member Jerry Duplessis paid themselves at least $410,000 for services provided to the foundation.
Wyclef ays that he’s just returned from Haiti and that he’s always been committed to the people of the earthquake-ravaged region. He continues by saying that he’s disappointed to come back to an “attack on my integrity and my foundation.”
Yele Haiti has raised more $2 million for the island nation’s earthquake relief fund as part of a special text campaign.
Wyclef Jean is asking friends and fans to pray for the people of his native Haiti after the island was hit by deadly earthquake on Tuesday. Reports suggest the triple quake caused the collapse of buildings, including a hospital, which tumbled into a ravine.
“It is really a catastrophe of major proportions,” Raymond Joseph, the US ambassador to Haiti, said late Tuesday. Many of the buildings in Haiti are made of concrete and the ravished city is now jsut a cloud of dust. Officials note that there is a serious loss of life expected. The former Fugees star is asking for assistance for victims of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck near the capital this afternoon.

Wyclef Jean is going back to school.
The former Fugees star announced his plans to study songwriting and music at Boston’s Berklee College during an appearance the Congressional Black Caucus Convention in Washington last weekend.
“I am enrolling in Berklee College in Boston to get my bachelor’s degree in music! That’s how important education is to me. I plan to work with Rev Al Sharpton because that’s how important stressing the importance of education to children is to me.”

Wyclef Jean’s Miami mansion has fallen into foreclosure. The singer reportedly owes over $2 million in mortgage payments on unfinished home.
According to TMZ.com, Miami-Dade County will auction off the house on December 12.
And it wasn’t just the mortgage that wasn’t paid — court docs show there were plenty of people working on the house that haven’t gotten paid either.

Jacob the Jeweler sued Wyclef Jean in Manhattan on Tuesday claiming the rapper owes Jacob and Company Incorporated $319,680 money for watches and jewelry he bought between March 2002 and January 2006.
Clef still owes the corporation despite “repeated demands for payment, according to the suit.
The company’s founder, Jacob Arabov, was sentenced in June to 21/2 years in federal prison for lying to investigators about a drug ring.
