Fat Joe is challenging fellow Puerto Rican music star Daddy Yankee to a political debate after the reggaeton pioneer publicly endorsed Republican senator John McCain’s campaign for President during a Phoenix press conference this week.

“I’m talking to little cousins that like [Yankee] and all that, and they’re starting to believe that John McCain is [the best candidate]. I can’t have that,” Joe said in an interview with MTV News on Thursday.

“I opened the newspaper and got sick to my stomach. I felt like I wanted to vomit when I seen that. The reason why I called [Yankee] a sellout is because I feel he did that for a [publicity] look, rather than the issues that are affecting his people that look up to him. How could you want John McCain in office when George Bush and the Republicans already have half a million people losing their homes in foreclosure? We’re fighting an unjust war. It’s the Latinos and black kids up in the frontlines, fighting that war. … We over here trying to take the troops out of Iraq and bring peace. This guy immediately wants war. If not with Iraq or Afghanistan, he’ll start a new one with Iran. I feel real disgusted that Daddy Yankee would do that. Either he did that for a look, or he’s just not educated on politics.”

“If he believes John McCain is the better candidate for the Latinos, we could sit down. Even if he wants to get into a debate, we can debate anywhere — New York, Puerto Rico.”

“Like I said, with me, my whole philosophy on blacks and Latinos is: We’re all one. We’re in the same ghettos, same inner cities, and we’re suffering from the same problems. Every problem the blacks have, the Latinos have. There’s two systems of health care: the one for the rich that’s really good, then there’s the one for the inner city, where they leave ladies in the emergency room unattended for 24 hours until they drop dead. … People don’t even check on her hours after she’s dead. This is normal stuff. This is what’s happening in the U.S.”

I’ve been a die-hard Daddy Yankee fan since his Playero days, and I got sick to my stomach when I heard he’d endorsed McCain too… I was like, How can a man who has championed the inner city youth in PR, who has repped for all the barrio folks out there, back this Republican dude who has absolutely no interest in the Latino community (and particularly, in impoverished Latino areas)?! But once my anger subsided, I thought about it and, really, this is his choice and I have to respect it — even if I don’t agree with it. I think what worries me is that I doubt he really knows what goes down with Republicans here in the U.S. See, because he lives in PR, his understanding of US politics is a bit slanted. Having grown up over there, I can say that most island boricuas no little about the filthy practices of the Republican party or even about racial politics here in the U.S. The Repubican party has actively courted island boricuas by talking about all the funding they’ll give the island and how they’re pro statehood and all this other mess (meanwhile, they’re dropping bombs in Vieques, running secret medical experiments in El Yunque, and plotting with the FBI to persecute and kill political prisoners)… Unfortunately, many island boricuas bought into that nonsense — mostly, because of a lack of information. Really, if anything, this is an indication of the dire need for better communication between Ricans here in the States and those in the island…

You know what? Good for Daddy Yankee. Not every person from the city is obligated to line up behind the next new democrat. Why is it that immigrants of all nationalities can come over here with barely enough silver to get a Coke, and within a few years they got their peice of the American dream. Because they saving their $$$ and not spending it on $200.00 pairs of Nikes and other junk. Face it. If a man can’t make it in America, it’s a wrap! We think that every democrat that steps up on the podium is “our man”. They throw a social program here, a crutch there…and we buy it hook, line and sinker every four years. Wake up! People make it when they think about the future generations. There is no excuse for us. Not Bush, not republicans….it is us! By the way, I’m not voting for Obama nor McCain.

I second what “B” had to say! Boriquas wake up! My grandmother came to NY to start a new life for her two little girls (my mother and my aunt) as a single mother back in 50’s…probably like many of your families! My grandmother had nothing when she came to NY but she worked hard as a factory worker—with no help from the governement! My mother and aunt grew up in the Bronx with about 10 people living in their tiny apartment. They had barely any possessions to speak of but they had love…and a bunch of strong puertorican women raising them…no father and no governnment to support them! My grandmother raised two wonderful women who not only graduated high school, but my aunt finished a 2 yr vocational school while my mom recieved her 4yr Bachelor’s degree. They both married great men, who stuck around to raise their children. They raised children to respect themselves, work hard, and not expect the government to bail them out. So here we are with me, first generation born here, outside of Puerto Rico, I have a Bachelor’s degree, own and operate my own successful business at age 33. I have worked hard like my puertorican grandmother and my puertorican mother and I am now seeing the fruits of that hard work. Success doesn’t happen by sitting on your ass asking for a handout while buying $200 Nikes. There are sacrifices to be made! My mother was dirt poor growing up in the Bronx but she was told she could do anything! Thank God she listen to her strong puertorican mother to work hard and be self-sufficient and not some slick politician claiming to rescue her from poverty.
But unfortunately, this is Obama’s game…he preys on minorities in order to ensure job security, just like Jesse Jackson, just like Al Sharpton. They have the black and latino race right where they want them…by the balls! They want to keep us down so that we will be dependent on them…forever! The second you start making some good money of your own because of your hard work, they will want to take it from you and give it to all of the people sitting on their asses whining about how bad they have it. So basically the harder you work and the more successful you are, the more they want to take from you and give to the people who don’t work as hard as you. Does that seem right? Well if it does, then Obama is your man! But don’t forget we live in America…anything is possible with hard work and determination for any race, more than any other place in the world! If you’re not making it, it’s your own damn fault! Don’t blame anyone else for it. Don’t believe the lies, they are just trying to keep you ignorant and dependent! I encourage you to educate yourself, stop spending your money foolishly, work hard and save…and stop being a racist hypocrite! Get over the skin color of John Mccain!

Fat Joe is a CLOWN. He is so stupid that he doesn’t even realize what the Republican Party means in Puerto Rico. As a Boricua myself, I think it’s unfair that Fat Slob thinks that he has some inalienable right to tell the people of the Island what to do and who to vote for. His records aren’t even selling stateside. For all the crapola Fat Slob talks about in his songs, he can’t can’t even put his clownish face in the mirror to see that some Boricuas may actually WANT to have the same amenities afforded to them as HE enjoys. If DY wants to support the Republicans in te Island, so be it. The ywant statehood. PR right now is a sad sack case of corruption and BS. Anibal messed up a lot, AND he supported Obama, which is why Obama lost the Primaries there to Clinton. Not to mention that Hillary actually helped stopped the bombing in Vieques. I never ONCE saw Fat Slob go down there and protest the Vieques occupation. He is a joke, as are all those rappers who talk so much BS and have zero intelligence. They are nothing but opium for the mindless drones that inhabit Hip Hop in the U.S. If DY is sincere in his support of a party that HE thinks will help the Island, that is HIS RIGHT. Fat Slob needs to go and lose some weight. He’s not even Puerto Rican. Fat Slob is half-Cuban like the Shitbull guy who is another bundle of contradictions. Shitbull wants to capitalize his stupid product in an economy-depressed Dominican Republic., What a piece of work. Not to mention that Shitbull criticizes Castro, YET wears Scarface t-shirts, right. Someone needs to slap Fat Slob and Shitbull because they are a couple of know-nothing Nuyoricans who try to impress their arrogance on us. No one wants their nonsense here. Fat Slob is a dumb, Uncle Festerlooking dude with shit for brains.

What do you think?
