Uh-oh… Morehouse College, one of the nation’s oldest historically black institutions recently enacted a controversial ban oncross-dressing. Did we forget to mention that Morehouse — which boasts prestigious alumni like civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and director Spike Lee –just happens to reside in ole Atlanta, the gayest Black male city in America?

Morehouse-Dress-Code

The all-male Morehouse took steps in a new dress code — effective this month — that bans “clothing associated with women’s garb” according to the announcement originally published in The Maroon Tiger, Morehouse’s student newspaper.

According to The Tiger, the new dress code also stiupulates:

–No caps, do-rags and/or hoods in classrooms, the cafeteria, or other indoor venues.

This policy item does not apply to headgear considered as a part of religious or cultural dress.

-No sagging–the wearing of one’s pants or shorts low enough to reveal undergarments or secondary layers of clothing.

-No wearing of clothing associated with women’s garb (dresses, tops, tunics, purses, pumps, etc.) on the Morehouse campus or at college-sponsored events.

-Other bans of clothing and accessories include: no grillz on campus, no bare feet in public, and no pajamas in public or common areas. Students who don’t follow the dress policy will be instructed to leave class or other functions.

Scott Jaschik of Inside Higher Ed explains that the new dress code has little opposition and that Morehouse officials have expressed ninety percent of students are already observing this new “appropriate attire policy.” Unfortunately, not all of Morehouse’s student body are championing the changes.

A group of gay students have come out in opposition of the new dress code, claiming that it hinders their self-expression. What do you say, guys? Enrollment at Morehosue — like many Black colleges — has declined in the past year, while endowments have dropped and fundraising sources have dried up during the nation’s economic meltdown. Is this the best time for administrators to piss off the student body?

Nice try. And as long as you keep on hating and discriminating, there will never be a real “change.”

I am very proud to know that finially we have a HBCU that is taking a stand on what is right. If we don’t train and teach our young men what is right and what is expected than who will. It’s time we stop acting like its okay to wear our pants low and show our underwear, with our grills jacked up, and it’s okay to be over the top and cross dress and show just how dirty we can be and say I don’t care what others say and think. I back you 100% and believe that its time we stop thinking we need to agree with what is wrong. To allow those things to take place without saying anything is the same as giving your seal of approval. So I am so proud of Morehouse College and pray that others will take your lead. Thank you for being real and taking a stand.
