Just days after it arrived on store shelves, the Barack Obama Chia– the latest invention in the Chia Pet line of ceramic chia seed planters-has been pulled from circulation in Chicago and Tampa Bay Walgreens stores after the chain was flooded with allegations of racism.

Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger says the company has received so many complaints about the Obama Chia that the decision was made to remove it from store shelves in those cities. Store managers began receiving complaints from consumers who were offended by the president as a Chia product, which has green sprouts that grow into an afro.

It “is not appropriate for the company’s corporate image,” Elfinger said of the presidential Chia Pet in a statement.

The Obama Chia – which comes in two versions, “happy” and “determined,”– is still be available at www.chiaobama.com.
