Oprah, I have been a victim of domestic abuse. I stayed for a long time. I have spent a lot of time thinking about why I stayed and have come to the conclusion that what the experts say is true, low self esteem to begin with, lower self esteem from the abuse, lower self esteem for staying. But one thing I don’t hear mentioned is that when someone is that mean to you, you can’t handle it emotionally, I mean your mind is unable to digest it. So you stay to allow the redemption of your abuser. You want to make it all, alright. That’s what that sweet woman is doing. She just wants to make it right until she can get her head around it. It is too much to comprehend. I think that may be part of the Stockholm Syndrome. Maybe an expert can comment. Thanks.

I stayed for many years for exactly that reason. I was unable to comprehend that my abuser knew what he was doing and so I was always trying to prove to him and myself that he didnt mean what he was doing . I stayed to try and find the good in him that I thought had to exist.. Unfortunately the more I thought some good would come out , the worse traits came out instead. .IWhen you love someone that much to accept their flaws and try to help them see them, its incomprehensable that all they want to do his control you and hurt you and your/their children. You stay to try and see some good and prove you couldnt possibly have been so wrong about this person.
